The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in its 77th session to announce March 30, “International Day for the Elimination of Hunting” to highlight the importance of strengthening waste management and recycling, adopting production and sustainable consumption practices to reduce waste of natural resources. He added that some statistics indicate that the losses of losses and waste of food cause between 8 to 10% of the greenhouse gases, and it is a major source of methane emissions, while about 735 million people suffer from hunger worldwide, and families are wasted more than a billion meals of edible foods daily, which is equivalent to 1.3 meals per day per person affected by hunger in the world, they are still Funding opportunities to reduce losses and waste losses of low -carbon foods and diets are not exploited, as only $ 0.1 billion was invested annually in 2019/20. This represents a small part of the annual needs of 48 to $ 50 billion. ”
He continued: «The loss and waste of foods lead to the sustainability of diets. When food is lost or wasted, all resources that are used to produce this food – including water, soil, energy, employment and capital – goes in vain. Moreover, food disposal, loss of food and waste in waste burials causes greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to climate change. It can also affect the loss of food and waste negatively on food security, food availability, and increase its cost.
Entering innovative techniques and solutions
He stressed that diets cannot be flexible if they are not sustainable, hence the need to focus on adopting an integrated approach designed to reduce the loss and waste of foods, which requires taking measures at the global and local levels to maximize the use of foods we produce. Studies gather that the introduction of innovative technologies and solutions, including e -commerce platforms for marketing and mobile processing systems that can be withdrawable, new work methods and good practices for food quality management and reduce food loss and waste, is the key to implementing this transformative change. Waste export
The Waste Control Department of the Supreme Council of the Environment is studying an in -depth study of the waste disposal requests, with the aim of determining the best ways to treat, recycle or exploit it. Among the solutions adopted by the Council is the issuance of the necessary licenses for the export of waste outside the Kingdom of Bahrain, according to the Kingdom’s obligations under the Basel Convention on the transportation of dangerous waste across the border, which Bahrain was among the first signed and ratified countries since 1992. The Kingdom of Bahrain has established environmental protection and preserving biological diversity at the top of its development priorities. The Kingdom’s government has paid great attention to environmental sustainability through its inclusion in the government program, which focuses on improving the efficiency of resource use and rationalization of energy consumption, as well as enhancing mechanisms for evaluating the environmental impact of economic projects and encouraging investment in the production and use of renewable energy.
Reducing the use of plastic
In line with the United Nations directions aimed at combating environmental pollution in plastic, the Bahrain government has developed sustainable policies aimed at reducing the use of plastic. These policies include encouraging the use of decomposing plastic bags and prohibiting the use of one and non -decomposing plastic bags throughout the Kingdom. It has also taken measures to reduce the production of plastic waste, including preventing manufacturing, importing or circulating plastic water and cups of small sizes of less than 200 milliliters. In later stages, it is planned to prohibit the use of plastic bags in some markets and commercial complexes. The government is also proud of its efforts to build partnerships with the private sector to protect the environment and natural resources, especially in the industrial sector.
The role of the private sector
The Supreme Council for the Environment works in coordination with private sector institutions to develop plans aimed at enhancing awareness of the importance of environmental protection and achieving sustainable development through improving practices and social responsibility. Regarding waste recycling, Bahrain seeks to enhance the role of the private sector in recycling plastic waste by providing sorting containers in public and private places to raise the rates of recycling of these waste. The Kingdom is also keen to get rid of all types of waste in an environmentally safe way, in line with local laws and international agreements, to confirm its international obligations in the field of environmental protection.
The role of community partnership

Mixed waste recycling
He added that cleaning companies will work in cooperation with local recycling companies and NGOs, along with other parties, to ensure extracting the maximum amount of recyclable materials from mixed waste, stressing that the first stage of the project will take place in coordination with the municipal councils, during which 300 recycling centers will be placed, each of them contains separate containers of glass, plastic, metal, paper and cardboard in locations that the public can access Easily. Special containers will also be provided to collect these waste from recycling centers, which contributes to the ease of sorting and using them in rapid treatment processes.
Distribution of assembly centers
He also stressed that the first stage of the distribution of assembly centers will be completed with the distribution of centers in the governorates of the capital and Muharraq, according to the work schedule in a manner that ensures their spread in various parts of the Kingdom of Bahrain, indicating that the second stage of work will include direct assembly from the house, where this service will be provided to homeowners who want to participate in the assembly plan to sort and clean their waste, adding that homeowners will be able to apply via the Internet electronically On the assembly service directly from the cleaning companies, as long as certain conditions are met regarding the quality of the recyclable materials, as the service will be available specifically for assembly.
Encourage research and innovation
Universities encourage professors and students to research and innovate in this field, as three students obtained the first position at the University of Bahrain from the Department of Civil Engineering for the success of their project related to integrating the dynamic modeling of systems with hydraulic modeling, with the aim of calculating the amount of wasted water, and its long -term effects on the water distribution networks in Bahrain. According to the papers of the students of the students of Zainab Al -Uraibi, Nour Hussein, and Maryam Abdul Majeed, the intended From the system proposed to obtain data related to the water distribution network, this data has been combined with the dynamics system to calculate the amount of water that is not achieved for revenue (NRW), and evaluate its environmental, economic and social effects and analysis and calculate its long -term effects on the water distribution networks in Bahrain resulting from water loss, which provides a deeper understanding of the interlocking relationships between these factors. 100 different scenarios and begin The study accompanying the project, with a simulation of realistic water leaks using a hydraulic model to collect accurate data based on information from scientific research and previous studies, before analyzing these data and using it in the system. The study includes the launch of 100 different scenarios, and in each scenario the number of leaks, size and location changes; Accordingly, the results that did not include one value were collected, and then these results were used in the dynamic system, which was given the estimation of the expected amounts of leaks annually through the range that was entered from the hydraulic system. The study indicates a test of several strategies for intervention, including the proactive replacement of water meters, the management of leaks in effective ways, and the reduction of delay periods in responding to leaks.
Reducing water losses
According to the study, the replacement of the meters had a major impact on reducing the irreversible water, as it achieved a 14% decrease in one of the years, and the leakage department helped in a proactive manner in reducing the water unintended revenue by up to 3.5% in some years. On the other hand, the study noted that the delay in responding to leaks leads to a slight increase in water loss, but in the long run it exacerbates the problem, and this highlights the importance of interventions at the appropriate time to effectively reduce water loss. The study concludes that this model is an effective tool to support the decision -making process, as it helps to define priority areas for intervention, evaluate the most appropriate operational strategies, and propose practical solutions to reduce water losses, and through these efforts, the project contributes to improving the efficiency of water distribution networks, reducing losses, and supporting the goals of Bahrain Vision 2030 to achieve sustainable water resources management.
