A spokesman for the Roma airport reported that a trip belonging to the American Airlines company was transferred on Sunday afternoon to the Italian capital while it was heading to New Delhi, due to “a threat to the presence of a bomb.”
In a statement, the American airline did not provide any details about the nature of what it described as a “possible security threat”, on the flight that was carrying 199 passengers in addition to the crew.
The plane was accompanied before landing at Fayouichino Airport, two Italian fighters.
The plane landed safely at Rome Airport, where it underwent inspection before giving it permission to leave again.
Mahish Kumar, one of the flight passengers, said that the pilot announced that the path was transferred to Rome into “security reasons”, about 3 hours before the landing.
Kumar added: “They asked us to sit and not to wander while combat aircraft flying near us,” noting that the Italian police accompanied the passengers to undergo a security examination at the airport after landing.
The flight took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, on Saturday evening, according to the Flight Awir flight tracking site, which showed that the plane had changed its course significantly while flying over the Caspian Sea.
An American airline official said that the plane landed in Rome due to the conditions of the Indian airports protocol.
“We concluded that the potential problem is not credible, but according to the New Delhi Airport Protocol, an inspection was required before landing there.”
He continued: “The plane will remain at Rome Airport all night to allow the crew to take the necessary comfort, before continuing its way to New Delhi Airport as soon as possible.”
A spokesman for Rome Airport pointed out that the airport operations were not affected by the accident.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (Fah AA) confirmed that the plane landed in peace “after the crew reported a security problem.”
