Charlie Puth says goodbye to TikTok with ‘See You Again’ performance

Charlie Puth is sending TikTok off with a proper farewell.

On Friday, he shared footage of himself beautifully playing “See You Again,” his 2015 song with Wiz Khalifa, on the piano and without any words. See the video —which he shared on TikTok, because of course — below.

“Farewell TikTok,” he captioned it. “Although this isn’t goodbye…”

The song was especially prescient because it came as the video app’s prospects in the United States were dwindling. On Friday, hours after Puth posted, the Supreme Court upheld a federal law banning the app here beginning Sunday, unless it is divested by its Chinese owners. A bipartisan majority in Congress had backed the legislation last year, saying TikTok’s Chinese ownership was a threat to national security. However, 170 million Americans have continued to use the social media platform.

President-elect Donald Trump, who is scheduled to be sworn into office Monday, commented on his own Truth Social platform that he is reviewing the situation. The former star of The Apprentice had previously asked the court to delay enacting the law but they did not.

“See You Again” was a monster hit from the time it was released in 2015. Written by Puth, Khalifa, and others, the emotional song was their answer to a track that could be used in the movie Furious 7 to honor late The Fast and the Furious franchise star Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in November 2013. He was 40.

The song proved to be a monster hit, spending 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earning nominations for Grammy and Golden Globe awards.

Puth is an avid user of TikTok, having even used it to document the creation of his 2022 album Charlie. He gave fans a peek at the development of 10 of the 12 tracks he used.

“This would be my first album if I had a time machine and I could go back in time and do it,” he told Entertainment Weekly in September 2022. People come up to me and say they’re excited for the album, they love the way track 1 or track 4 sounds, and I really feel nobody had ever cared about a whole body of work from me in the past. This is the first time people are asking me when an album’s coming out on TikTok.”

His song was prompting the commenters to post lots of crying emojis.
