Keanu Reeves says he doesn’t know if his ‘knees can do’ ‘John Wick 5’

Keanu Reeves and being relatable, name a more iconic duo.

The actor had a perfect (and brutally honest) response when asked about the possibility of a fifth film in the wildly successful John Wick franchise during a recent appearance on CBS Mornings.

“You can never say never — but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,'” said Reeves, adding, “So my heart [wants to], but I don’t know if my knees can do it.”

Currently, the 60-year-old is promoting his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in which he lends his voice to the villainous Shadow. He was joined in his appearance on CBS Mornings by that film’s director Jeff Fowler, who joked to his star, “Which is why you can voice Shadow for, like, decades to come — there are no physical limitations, just your voice!” To Fowler, Reeves added, “I’m free!”

To date, the first four films in the John Wick franchise — all starring Reeves in the titular role — have grossed more than $1 billion combined. However, the fourth film famously ends with the assassin essentially sacrificing himself in a Paris-set gun duel with his old friend Caine (Donnie Yen). Instead of using his last bullet to kill Caine, a badly wounded Wick instead chooses to murder Bill Skarsgård’s villain, Marquis Vincent de Gramont. Wick then sees a vision of his dead wife, Bridget Moynihan’s Helen, and seemingly dies on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur. A final scene features Ian McShane’s Winston and Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King visiting the grave of John Wick.

Some fans felt the ending to be ambiguous. And, according to director Chad Stahelski, a different ending with Wick clearly surviving was shot and shown to test audiences, but they (and Stahelski and Reeves) preferred the more unclear ending. All of which has led Wick fans to wonder if a fifth film could still be in the cards.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly after the film’s release, Reeves said, “I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on never say never. I mean, I wouldn’t do a John Wick film without Chad Stahelski. We’d have to see what that looked like. For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace.”

Whether or not a fifth film ever happens, John Wick fans will get to see Reeves portray the role at least one more time. The actor plays the character in the upcoming spin-off movie Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas and is directed by Underworld filmmaker Len Wiseman.

“Yeah, I got to work with Ana de Armas and the director Len Wiseman, and they had a great script, and John Wick has a small part to play in it,” Reeves told EW of the project. “Len Wiseman was cool. He was like, ‘Where do you want to pitch this story in [the] timeline?’ So, it takes place between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of the John Wick stories. It was fun to put the suit back on.”

Reeves returns as John Wick when Ballerina opens in theaters June 6, 2025.
