Celebrities, world leaders pay tribute to Jimmy Carter after his death

President Joe Biden, George Takei, and Stephen King are just a few of the famous figures who are paying tribute to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter after his death at age 100 on Sunday. 

The Democratic politician, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his dedication to humanitarian efforts and human rights after his presidency, had been receiving hospice care at his home for over a year prior to his death. He is survived by his children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy — as well as his grandchildren, which includes grandson and Claim to Fame contestant, Hugo Wentzel. 

Biden, who announced that he would order for a funeral for Carter to be held in D.C., remembered the centenarian as “an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian” in a poignant X post. “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us,” Biden wrote in part. “He saved, lifted and changed the lives of people all across the globe.”

Journalist Katie Couric noted that she always felt a “kindred spirit” in Carter. “I adored Jimmy Carter,” she wrote in part on X. “My dad was from Dublin, Georgia, and I always felt a kindred spirit in him. I was privileged to interview him on a number of occasions. People can debate his presidency, but man, his post-presidency was unparalleled.” 

The Mandalorian and Elf star Amy Sedaris posted an image of Carter on Instagram with the caption: “I loved him! Still do. He sent me a letter when I made first class Girl Scouts. I was obsessed with Jimmy Carter. What an incredible human being. No one like him.”

And President-elect Donald Trump also shared his condolences on Truth Social. “President Jimmy Carter is dead at 100 years of age. While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for,” he wrote. “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office. Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!”
