Ogun CJ Begins Jail Delivery Exercise, Commends Justice Stakeholders
The role of the newly created Prison Courts established across the five prisons formations of Ogun State has been commended, as its effects in decongestion of prisons in the State is yielding positively.
Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu gave this charge at the beginning of a three day jail decongestion exercise of the five prison formations across the State.
Dipeolu added that, in order to speed up administration of justice and in line with the State new Administration of Criminal Justice Law, the present administration of the State Judiciary had created a Justice Sector Reform Team, which would go a long way at reducing awaiting trials inmates in prisons amongst others.
“I want to commend all stakeholders in the justice administration team, the DPPs’, the Nigeria Police; we all have less of old cases, such as 2017. It is really commendable and great improvement in the justice system”, Dipeolu emphasized.
The freed inmates at the Sagamu and Ijebu Ode Prisons were charged to be of good conduct and portray themselves as good citizens of their respective States, as they go back to the larger society.
Earlier in his welcome address, Officer-in-Charge of Sagamu Prison, SP Bolaji Joseph, said the focus of the Prisons Service has shifted to correctional reformation and rehabilitation, adding that all hands must be on deck to unclog the justice system, while sustaining her sanctity.
At the end of the first day of the exercise, nine and four Inmates were released at the Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu Prisons respectively, with a charge to be of good conduct in the society.
It would be recalled that 68 inmates awaiting trials regained their freedom at the last prison decongestion exercise that took place in December, 2018.
